NGO to Put 1,000 Benches in Rural Schools for Pupils

As reported by Independent Probe · January 26, 2024

Rural Liberian school-going pupils, especially those in Lofa County, may no longer endure sitting on the bare ground or on pieces of bricks or rock to learn, as One Bench at a Time Liberia (OBTL) plans to put at least 1,000 benches in rural schools.

The NGO said many students in rural Liberia lack adequate benches and chairs, compelling them to sit on the floor or on makeshift materials.

“We firmly believe that supporting the education sector is crucial for Liberia's progress,” said Co-founder Ms. Menekeh Pshorr Giddings, pointing to OBTL's inaugural donation of 25 locally built benches to the Yarpuah Community School in Lofa County — benefiting over 100 students and residents.

OBTL announced a re-launch fundraiser with Teach For Liberia and the Lutheran Training Institute at the YMCA on January 30, 2024, with Senator Momo Cyrus serving as chief fundraiser.

Ms. Giddings said it is not yet known how many schools will benefit, adding: “We are trying to raise funds for two teachers at the cost of US$300 each and 1,000 school chairs and benches at US$25 per bench.”
